#Potcake

You are 100 percent thinking the title of this post has to do with Marijuana, right? WRONG! My mind went there as well when I first heard it, but down in the Islands it has to do with a dog or a person that is all mixed up with different breeds or ethnicities. My daughter is a #potcake! I love it, I love learning new terms or sayings from different places. We are currently on Spring Break vacation with my Mom and Stepdad in the Bahamas. A little place in the Abacos called Hopetown, Elbow Cay. I have been coming here for the last 30 years, since I was my daughters age. It’s one of those rare gems you find and you fall in love with the place or you don’t. We clearly fell in love! It’s not for everyone here, it’s not a luxurious resort where everyone is catering to you, so if that is your jam don’t come here. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is super friendly and helpful on these islands, but in my opinion it’s a place that is more for folks that know how to take care of themselves on vacation, like to do some exploring, rent a house opposed to staying on a big resort, that sort of vacation, if you know what I am talking about? This island is my happy place, I feel at home here, I know the island really well and I don’t really miss my real home in New York the way I would if I was some where else.

I should be going to a different destination with my daughter at every opportunity we have to go away, but I am waiting to do that until she is at an age where she is truly going to appreciate going to places like Thailand, Africa, Italy. This is only her second year at this little island we are on, but I think she appreciates something consistent which has been a tradition in our family. I want her to carry on the tradition, so for now I am satisfied with doing something we know and leaving the big trips for an age where she will truly be enthralled by the adventure. I see a lot of families taking these huge trips, going to museums and all these amazing towns all over the world with their babies and toddlers. I don’t remember half the trips I went on from that age. I remember all the trips from about 8-9 years old and beyond. Those are the memories that really stuck because I was at an age ready to experience what these different places had to offer. I want my little Potcake baby girl to look back and remember all of the fabulous experiences.

For now, we have a consistent place that I hope will feel like home away from home one day to her. I think it’s important to find that one magical place that you can easily escape too every now and then.

I need to get to the beach and live my best life for the next few days, but I wanted to check in!
